  • A simple wire clip for Ender 5 printers, plus an interesting new filament.

I've been meaning, for some time, to find a way to secure the hotend and extruder stepper wires on my Ender 5 Pro so that they are not strained and are kept from catching on anything. Yesterday, I used openSCAD to design a clip that can attach to the X axis stepper motor cover. It has a hole in the end to capture the wires in question, and then I use a tie wrap to secure the wires to the clip.

    Here's a screenshot from openSCAD:

And here are a few photos of the clip after it was installed:

From the last, overview photo you can see that the clip holds the wiring up in a nice arc. It can nicely reach all 4 corners of the bed without any strain. The clip snaps onto the motor cover really nicely: firm but not too hard. Put it this way, it's not going to pop off on its own 😊

The other thing I wanted to point out is the texture of the print. I think it's seen best in the 1st photo. The 1st thing I noticed when I popped the print off the bed is that lack of print lines. I couldn't believe it. I know it's printed at 0.12mm layer height, but still, it's crazy smooth. It just looks like a piece of matte molded plastic. The filament is one I haven't tried before: Hello3D PETG Carbon Black. It prints at normal PETG temps (240C/80C) and I just used my normal brass nozzle. I have no idea if it really has carbon fiber in it, or if the name refers only to the color and texture.

If anyone is interested, I can upload the STL and/or the SCAD files.
